    What is bodmas / expressions?

BODMAS fixes the order in which brackets, orders (powers), division, multiplication, addition and subtraction are carried out.

    Why it matters

Without a shared order of operations, the same expression would give different answers — every later calculation depends on it.

    Key concepts you will practise

    • Order: brackets → powers → × and ÷ (left to right) → + and − (left to right)
    • Nested brackets
    • Expressions with negative numbers
    • Inserting brackets to reach a target value

    Tips that save marks

    • Work one operation per line so mistakes are easy to trace.
    • Division and multiplication rank equally — go left to right, not division first.

    Frequently asked questions

Does multiplication always come before division?

No. They have equal priority and are done left to right as they appear.

What do I do with nested brackets?

Start with the innermost bracket and work outwards.
