    Vedic Math Tricks

Eight mental math shortcuts for squaring, multiplication, division and subtraction — each with the exact steps and a worked example.

Why these tricks make mental math fast

Every trick below is an exact algebraic identity from the Vedic sutras, rewritten as two or three small steps you can hold in your head. Instead of carrying digits through long multiplication, you work from a nearby base — 10, 50 or 100 — and adjust.

Learn one trick at a time, drill it on ten numbers, then move to the next. Each card links to the full sutra lesson and practice quiz where one exists.

    Trick 1

Square any number ending in 5

Multiply the leading digits by the next whole number and append 25.

    1. Drop the final 5 and take the remaining number (for 65, take 6).
    2. Multiply it by one more than itself (6 × 7 = 42).
    3. Write 25 after that result to get the square (4225).

    Example: 65² = 4225

    Trick 2

    🔢 Multiply any two-digit number by 11

Split the digits and drop their sum in the middle.

    1. Separate the two digits of the number (for 34, take 3 and 4).
    2. Add them together to get the middle digit (3 + 4 = 7).
    3. Place the sum between the original digits (374). If the sum is 10 or more, carry the tens digit to the left.

    Example: 34 × 11 = 374

    Trick 3

💯 Multiply two numbers close to 100

Work with the shortfall from 100 instead of the numbers themselves.

    1. Find how far each number is below 100 (96 → 4, 97 → 3).
    2. Subtract one shortfall from the other number for the left part (96 − 3 = 93).
    3. Multiply the two shortfalls for the right part (4 × 3 = 12).
    4. Join the parts as a two-digit right half to get 9312.

    Example: 96 × 97 = 9312

    Trick 4

Subtract from any power of 10

Take every digit from 9 and the last digit from 10.

    1. Write the number you are subtracting under the power of 10 (1000 − 486).
    2. Subtract every digit except the last from 9 (9 − 4 = 5, 9 − 8 = 1).
    3. Subtract the last digit from 10 (10 − 6 = 4) to get 514.

    Example: 1000 − 486 = 514

    Trick 5

✖️ Multiply two-digit numbers vertically and crosswise

Three quick products replace long multiplication.

    1. Multiply the units digits for the right column (3 × 4 = 12; write 2, carry 1).
    2. Cross-multiply and add for the middle column (2×4 + 3×3 = 17; add the carry → 18; write 8, carry 1).
    3. Multiply the tens digits and add the carry for the left column (2×3 + 1 = 7) to get 782.

    Example: 23 × 34 = 782

    Trick 6

    Divide a two-digit number by 9

The first digit is the quotient; the digit sum is the remainder.

    1. Take the tens digit as the quotient (for 52, the quotient starts at 5).
    2. Add both digits for the remainder (5 + 2 = 7).
    3. If the remainder reaches 9 or more, add 1 to the quotient and subtract 9 — so 52 ÷ 9 = 5 remainder 7.

    Example: 52 ÷ 9 = 5 remainder 7

    Trick 7

    🎯 Square numbers near 50

Start from 25 and adjust by the distance from 50.

    1. Find the difference from 50 (54 → +4).
    2. Add that difference to 25 for the left part (25 + 4 = 29).
    3. Square the difference for the right two digits (4² = 16) to get 2916.

    Example: 54² = 2916

    Trick 8

    🚀 Multiply by 5, 25 or 125 instantly

Halve, quarter or eighth the number, then shift the decimal.

    1. For ×5, halve the number and multiply by 10 (48 → 24 → 240).
    2. For ×25, divide by 4 and multiply by 100 (48 → 12 → 1200).
    3. For ×125, divide by 8 and multiply by 1000 (48 → 6 → 6000).

    Example: 48 × 25 = 1200

    Vedic Math tricks FAQ

    What are Vedic Math tricks?

Vedic Math tricks are mental calculation shortcuts derived from the 16 Vedic sutras. Each trick replaces long arithmetic with a short pattern — for example squaring any number ending in 5 in a single step — so you can calculate faster without a calculator.

Do Vedic Math tricks actually work for every number?

Yes. Every trick is backed by a standard algebraic identity, so it is exact rather than an approximation. Each trick simply has a range where it is fastest: numbers ending in 5, numbers near a base like 50 or 100, or multiplication by 11, 25 and 125.

How long does it take to learn fast calculation tricks?

Most learners can apply a single trick reliably after about 15 minutes of practice, and comfortably use eight to ten tricks within a couple of weeks of short daily sessions.

Are Vedic Math tricks allowed in exams?

Yes. They are ordinary arithmetic done mentally, so they are allowed in school exams and competitive tests. Show the standard working where the paper asks for steps, and use the trick to check your answer quickly.

Which Vedic Math trick should I learn first?

Start with squaring numbers ending in 5 and multiplying by 11. Both take one step, apply very often, and build the confidence needed for crosswise multiplication and base methods.
