Complex numbers extend the real numbers with i, where i² = −1, and are written a + ib or in polar/modulus-argument form.
They are essential for quadratic roots, Class 11 exams and later work in engineering and signal processing.
The conjugate of a + ib is a − ib; multiplying the two gives the real number a² + b².
When the discriminant is negative, the roots exist only as complex numbers.
