Conic sections — circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola — are the curves formed when a plane cuts a double cone.
They dominate coordinate geometry in Class 11 and appear throughout entrance exams and physics (orbits, projectiles, optics).
It measures how far the conic departs from a circle: 0 for a circle, less than 1 for an ellipse, 1 for a parabola, more than 1 for a hyperbola.
